Mt. Besak, CT Trail Maintenance
On Sunday, March 14, a cadre of LIOR members went
to Mt. Besak to perform trail maintenance. We spent a good part
of the day building waterbars on the newly christened
"Runway". Boringly straight to drive, this long
hillclimb threatened to gather rain runoff into a torrent aimed
directly at the pond below. Rather than allow the trail to
degrade, and to stop mud pollution of the pond, LIOR built a
series of rock waterbars across the trail. The waterbars were
constructed to allow hikers, bikers and stock 4x4's to zigzag
through. Water runoff will splash harmlessly through, the
potentially harmful energy dissipated by the rocks. Wheelers will
dissipate their excess energy by weaving over the rock bars.
The "Area 227" portion of the popular Mt. Besak trail
system adds some new opportunities for four wheeling fun for all
levels. Some of our best-built rigs had trouble attacking the new
obstacles, especially those who tried a frontal attack on the
Hanger. Of course, the man-made stuff is all optional, so as not
to block passage for other forest users.
